Sewing Party- Volunteer Event

Last night, November 27th, we hosted the first sewing party on campus with assistance from the LEAD Scholars Program. We couldn't have been more pleased with the amount of students who volunteered and made dolls and hearts to send to Costa Rica. We are truly blessed to have the support from the UCF student body, and we know that next semester would only helps us move forward with our mission. At the sewing party, 15 dolls were finished and over 25 donation hearts were decorated.

Thank you LEAD Scholars and Joanne for donating their time for this event! We hope to see you all tonight for our final sewing party of the year.

Below are photos from the event and our awesome volunteers!

Beads for Life Tabling Event

This past Tuesday, November 20th, we held our tabling event benefiting Beads for Life, which helps raise women out of poverty. We couldn't have hoped for a better turnout, and we were amazed at the support we got from the students. We raised over $300 in donations!

After the event, however, we talked to a student supervisor who claimed that we were not allowed to solicit on campus, even though we were in a free-speech zone. It was hard for us to understand him simply because we were gathering donations for a charity and all the proceeds were being sent back to the women who had made the bead jewelry. Although this hurts our plans to sell beads in the future, we will not let this stop us from tabling once we are a registered student organization.

We are finishing the year strong with two more event next week! We will be hosting two sewing parties with Joanne and making dolls and hearts to send to Costa Rica as part of VUCF's Alternative Spring Break Program. Email us at dressedinhopeucf@gmail.com for more information.

Here are some pictures from the Beads for Life tabling event. Thank you for all who stopped by and made a donation!

Our first event on campus!

On Tuesday October 24th, we were honored to be able host our very first event on campus with the LEAD Scholars program. The event was recognized as an Impact event and Joanne Porreco, founder and director of Dressed in Hope, spoke about her organization and mission. The event had an amazing turnout, and we were thrilled to see so many students interested in our organization.

I would say the only mistake we made was to arrange a scheduled time for the event. The 45-minute period limited Joanne's presentation and students felt as if the event had taken too long. However, it's not possible to inform others about everything Dressed in Hope does and who they impact in such short amount of time. The history, purpose, goals, and change the organization has lead is too tremendous to leave out of the presentation, and it was hard for us to shorten Joanne's time.

After the event, we collected information from students who are interested in getting involved with our organization, and the list was unbelievable! We truly are thrilled to complete our registration process and begin hosting official events on campus. Until then, however, we will not stop building awareness about our group, and will continue to speak to other students about our mission and goals.

Look out for our next event coming up in November! You won't want to miss this one :)

A little trouble in paradise...

Over the last couple of weeks our plans to establish a student chapter of Dressed in Hope on campus have experienced some hardships. It is easy to imagine the registration process as fast and hassle-free for the most part, but we quickly learned that was not the case.

To begin, we are required to have a faculty adviser who is willing to donate their valuable time to meet with us and work with our group. We examined a list of possible picks for the position, but there was no one who could take the position this semester. After reviewing a list of faculty members, we also discovered the length of time required to set up a student organization. A minimum of 6 months is required and we simply couldn't afford to take that long to start sharing our organization.

We had to take matters into our own hands and determine possible resolutions for the issues we had encounter. We decided to turn in an application to begin the 6-month period of approval, and while doing so we used the time to search for faculty advisers who would be willing to take the position in the Spring. We weren't going to let any obstacle keep us from achieving our goals or sharing our cause.

For the past 5 weeks we have hosted 2 events within the Leadership program, held 1 tabling session, and planned the future of the organization as the end of the year quickly approaches. We are very proud of the amount of work we have been able to accomplish in such short amount of time.

We would like to leave you with a special quote by the female leader, Eleanor Roosevelt.
"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams"

Volunteer UCF Presents: Knights Give Back

Bright and early on Saturday, October 20th more than 40 students gathered at the Dressed in Hope sewing center as Volunteer UCF presented Knights Give Back. The event is held every year as part of Volunteer UCF's initiative to promote volunteerism in our community.

This was the first year Dressed in Hope participated in the event as one of the charities, and we couldn't have been more thrilled. The Village Walk sewing group welcomed our group with open arms and we quickly determined this was going to be an incredible experience.

We cut over 100 dresses, 75 purses, beaded beautiful necklaces, and created our very own dolls all for the children of impoverish countries. This marked the beginning of something wonderful coming to UCF. Dressed in Hope is here to stay, and from the results of Knights Give Back, we better find a bigger space to accommodate all our supporters. :)
